Shirt Making

Make any size, colour, pattern or variation on the classic buttoned shirt.

Starting from a basic shirt pattern, we will explore fit options and customisation to achieve the correct fit. We’ll then move on to cutting and construction, including all the fancy sleeve plackets and collar bits.

You will leave with a finished shirt (or failing that, the ability to finish it in your own time) and a custom shirt pattern made to your own fitting requirements and preferences.

Fabrics, thread and buttons are provided by you (contact me for a cutting list) or by arrangement, if you really can’t be bothered, I’ll find something for you.

All interfacing, tools and machines are provided (although you can have £20 off if you bring your own sewing machine.)

Prerequisite skills:

  • You should know how to thread and use a normal domestic sewing machine.
  • You should be able to sew a straight or curved seam with a given seam allowance and have it turn out like you planned.
  • It would be helpful if you’d made a garment or two before, it doesn’t matter if they turned out well.
  • You need a good attitude! Things will go wrong. You will have to unpick something and possibly re-cut something. It’s ok, we’ll get there in the end.

Tuition is from 9:30 til 4:30 with breaks for tea and lunch, though to be honest, we’ll probably work in the evening too. All meals are provided, funny diets are fine.
