Reconstructing Victorian Glamour

In my (voluntary) job at Royal Exchange Theatre’s costume hire department, I get to play with the most wonderful fabrics that I could never afford otherwise. They had this jacket, only the main fabric had been silk and had perished with the kind of punishing use we put it to.

So I was given it to play with, and I promptly took it apart, copied the pattern and raided the bits and pieces hamper to find a likely fabric and re-made it. The result looks pretty good!

I’d never done anything as complicated with back vents/pleats as this, so it was an exciting and fun education.

I’m definitely looking forward to applying all this experience to something for me to wear.
